LL Cool J drops out of Wawa Welcome America concert because of union strike [1]

LL Cool J is walking away from Friday's Wawa Welcome America concert in light of the AFSCME District Council 33 strike in Philadelphia.

In an Instagram post posted late on Thursday night, LL Cool J explained that he does not want to cross the picket line.

"I never ever ever want to disappoint my fans," he said in the post. "There is absolutely no way I can perform across a picket line."
The rapper said that he will be in the city and hopes that a resolution is made between Philadelphia leaders and the union.
If a deal is reached between the two parties, LL Cool J said that he will perform on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Friday, July 4.

AFSCME District Council 33 president Greg Boulware wrote in a statement on Thursday.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker responded to LL Cool J's decision to drop out of the Wawa Welcome America concert in a social media post Thursday night.
"I am aware that LL Cool J has decided not to perform at WAWA Welcome America’s July 4th Concert tomorrow evening on the Parkway. I spoke personally with LL Cool J today. I respect his decision, and understand his desire to see the city unified. He is always welcome in Philadelphia," Mayor Parker wrote.
Friday afternoon, Philly soul singer Jazmine Sullivan, who was also scheduled to perform, announced in her Instagram stories that she would drop out of the concert as well.
Mayor Parker released a statement in response to Sullivan's decision.
Wawa Welcome America also released a statement.
"Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert + Fireworks gates open at 4pm and will feature performances by Álvaro Díaz, JoJo, as well as Mr. HOLLYWOOD DJ, and DJ Ghost & Friends. Fireworks will launch after dark at approximately 9pm," Wawa Welcome America organizers wrote. "See you on the Parkway!"
