Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro gathered 55,000 supporters for a rally this Sunday (6) on Avenida Paulista, the main avenue in São Paulo, to ramp up pressure for an amnesty bill for the January 8 rioters — a measure that could also benefit him.
It was the first event organized by Bolsonaro since he became a defendant in Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) two weeks ago, accused of plotting a coup.

Bolsonaro’s political group showed strength by bringing along seven state governors, including Tarcísio de Freitas (São Paulo), Romeu Zema (Minas Gerais), Ratinho Jr. (Paraná), and Ronaldo Caiado (Goiás). They are considered likely presidential contenders for 2026, amid the void left by Bolsonaro’s disqualification.
In his speech, Bolsonaro repeated that he will not give up, throw in the towel, or flee.
He also issued a veiled threat to the judiciary, calling for votes to secure 50% of congressional seats for his allies by 2027. The Senate is responsible for reviewing impeachment requests against STF justices.
Bolsonaro also tried to flip the accusations, presenting himself as the victim of a political move in 2022: "The coup already happened. Just look — their candidate is in power. Some of them even admitted to interfering, but said it was for the good of democracy."
He also called Lula a "bum."
