Similarly, when asked broadly about Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts to fire or lay off tens of thousands of workers across multiple federal government agencies, a majority of veterans (53%) say they are opposed to these firings, while 41% are supportive. Among veterans who have been personally affected by DOGE firings, expect to be, or know someone who has, 76% say they oppose these firings.

While a strong majority of Republican veterans are initially supportive of DOGE’s firings, after being informed that “some estimates find that about one-third of all federal workers are veterans,” their support for the firings drops by 14 points.

Another major focus of DOGE and the Trump administration has been eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including at the Pentagon. In March, four U.S. senators who are veterans sent a letter to Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asking them to restore materials, including library books and online content, celebrating historic firsts and the accomplishments of women and minority groups in the military. When asked about the Trump administration instructing the U.S. military to remove all of these materials, more than 3 in 4 veterans (76%), including strong majorities across party lines, say they are opposed.
