San Antonio activists will gather at two separate locations this Wednesday to protest potential U.S. military intervention in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict. One protest , hosted by anti-war veteran group About Face South Texas along with Oppressed Revolutionaries for Worker Power, will take place 6 p.m. at 1598 E. Grayson St. outside one of the entrances to Fort Sam Houston. At the same time, the Party for Socialism and Liberation will hold a rally and banner drop at the U.S. Highway 281 overpass near the University of the Incarnate Word at Hildebrand Avenue. The United States is on the brink of war in Iran, seeking to topple the Islamic Revolutionary government of Iran," About Face said in a call to action on its Instagram account . "The justification being used for Israeli aggression and potential U.S. entry into the war is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. The genocidal [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu has been crying wolf about a nuclear Iran since the 1990s."Tensions are escalating over the United States potentially joining the conflict between Israel and Iran. Israel instigated the armed conflict a week ago with what it called a "preemptive strike" intended to cripple Iran's nuclear program.Though Iran has a nuclear energy program, its leaders assert that the research is not weapons-related. Even so, the country's recent activities shorten the amount of time needed to develop weaponry should it choose to do so, according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Iran has ignored international monitoring requirements since President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2018.Israel remains the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons.Though Trump recently said his patience "has already run out" with Iran, according to CNN , he's yet to commit to U.S. military intervention in the conflict. Nonetheless, the president has stoked fears by calling for Iran's " unconditional surrender " and posting on Truth Social that "Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!" — an impossibility for a city of 9.8 million people.Trump's new hawkishness on Iran also appears to be splintering his MAGA movement as non-interventionist "America First" adherents including Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and hard-right talk show host Tucker Carlson speak out against U.S. involvement. As of June 16, Amnesty International reports Israeli attacks have killed at least 224 people in Iran and Iranian attacks on Israel have killed at least 24 there.
