The gap between inflation and stagnant reimbursement rates has forced PPGNY to make difficult but necessary decisions to preserve future access to sexual and reproductive health care

Manhattan Health Center Waiting Room

NEW YORK, NY - Today, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York (PPGNY) announced it would list for sale its property at 26 Bleecker Street, home of PPGNY's Manhattan Health Center. This is part of PPGNY’s ongoing strategy to ensure future, long-term patient access for underserved communities throughout New York State.

Like many health care providers, PPGNY is fighting to overcome social and political obstacles and structural challenges within the country’s health system. New York State’s Medicaid program and private insurers inadequately cover the cost for patients to access high-quality sexual and reproductive health services. Thanks to the generosity of donors, PPGNY proudly cares for patients no matter their insurance status or ability to pay. However, until there are systemic improvements in the health care landscape, the gap between operating costs and low payer reimbursement rates will continue to widen. This requires PPGNY to carefully preserve and prioritize resources to effectively sustain operations and ensure future access to sexual and reproductive health services and community-centered programming.

Statement from Wendy Stark, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:

Our commitment to our patients is at the heart of our mission to provide equitable access to sexual and reproductive health care and education. The gap between inflation and stagnant reimbursement rates has forced us to make difficult but necessary decisions, including selling 26 Bleecker Street, home of the Manhattan Health Center. Funds from the sale will allow us to sustain services for systemically underserved communities – the people who need us most. We are responding to this urgent moment with bold actions to meet the demands of today, tomorrow, and the future. This is an emotional decision for us. 26 Bleecker Street has always been a special place - from serving all who turn to us, to training providers who positively impact the sexual and reproductive health care landscape in Manhattan and beyond. Its legacy is cemented in history. Now, it’s time for us to look ahead, assess where we are needed most, and continue to invest our resources in access to care and services for underserved communities. We see a future where we can build a new state-of-the-art health center in Manhattan, similar to our health centers in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The first step is putting the building on the market.

PPGNY’s Manhattan Health Center has served patients well since the early 1990s, but the outdated facility is not designed to support the health care needs of the future. Structural limitations and the rising costs of maintaining an older building have become barriers to delivering the most advanced patient-centered care. Today, the health center is open and continuing to offer patients a wide range of sexual and reproductive health care services, including STI testing and treatment, birth control, cancer screenings, wellness exams, medication abortion, and more. PPGNY’s newly modernized health centers in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx also offer sexual and reproductive health care services, including abortion and gender-affirming care. Patients can book an appointment below.

PPGNY will continue to partner with elected leaders and dedicated donors to connect the most marginalized New Yorkers to dignified, modernized, and affordable sexual and reproductive health care – no matter their zip code or ours.

PPGNY will share additional details in the coming months.
