Voters Want to Make Polluters Pay, Oppose Efforts to Grant Oil and Gas Companies Immunity for Climate Damages [1]

Nearly three-quarters of voters (73%) think oil and gas companies should be held either a great deal or somewhat responsible for the increasing costs of climate-related disasters, and a plurality of voters (43%) believe that oil and gas companies should bear more of these costs rather than working Americans. Similarly, a plurality (44%) also believe that Donald Trump’s energy policies benefit oil and gas companies over working Americans, though Republicans are more sympathetic to Trump’s energy policies.
Just over half of voters (53%) agree with a statement saying that Trump’s policies mean big oil and gas companies will make record profits while Americans pay more. A similar percentage of voters (52%) also agree with the statement that Trump’s “energy dominance” agenda allows big oil and gas companies to make more profits while banning clean energy and raising costs for working Americans.
A majority of voters believe that climate change (54%) and pollution from fossil fuels (54%) will greatly or somewhat impact their finances. The perceived financial impacts of climate change and pollution from fossil fuels splits somewhat across party lines, with a majority of Republicans believing that these factors will have little to no impact on their finances. Black voters and voters under 45 are more likely to believe climate change and pollution from fossil fuels will have a direct financial impact on them.
