Easter Sunday, one of the most important Christian holidays, and 4/20, an unofficial weed smokers' holiday, fall on the same day in 2025.

Easter is a movable feast, meaning it doesn't have a fixed date and sometimes falls on April 20.

The origin of 4/20 as a marijuana holiday is unclear, despite popular theories.

Two holidays fall on April 20, 2025. One is a very unofficial holiday for weed smokers and the other is one of the most important holidays in the Christian religion.

Yes, Easter Sunday and 4/20 are on the same day this year.

Here’s why Easter falls a little later than usual this year, on 4/20, and how the mid-April day became an unofficial holiday for weed smokers.

When is Easter 2025?

Easter this year will be in late April, on Sunday, April 20.

Why is Easter 2025 so late?

Easter Sunday sometimes falls in late April, because the holiday is not tied to a specific date.

The date of Easter and its related holidays also depend on whether you’re Eastern Orthodox or not. The Eastern Orthodox Church uses the Julian calendar, a solar calendar that was used by the Roman Empire. This year, Easter and Eastern Orthodox Easter fall on the same date, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

“Easter is a 'movable feast,' so it doesn’t happen on the same date from year to year. In the Gregorian calendar, it is always observed on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25,” the almanac says.

“However, Easter can be observed between April 4 and May 8 in the Eastern Orthodox Church … According to long-term averages, the most unusual Easter date is March 22. The second place goes to April 24, and the third place goes to March 23.”

What is the rarest date for Easter to fall on?

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac and long-term averages calculated by Harvard, the most unusual Easter date is March 22. Second place goes to April 24 and third place goes to March 23.

Why is 4/20 a pothead holiday? What is 4/20?

If you smoke pot, you know that 4/20 is a day for smoking weed with your like-minded pals – and you’ve probably already noticed it’s on Easter Sunday this year, which has happened before (see below).

Here’s a not-so-fun fact: April 20th was also Adolf Hitler’s birthday. You may have heard a rumor in grade school that 4/20 is a holiday based around the late, great reggae legend Bob Marley’s birthday, but that isn’t true. Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945.

The true origin of why marijuana lovers spark up on 4/20 (or even associate the time 4:20 with smoking pot) isn’t clear, but there are a few rumored possibilities.

Has Easter ever fallen on 4/20?

Yes, Easter Sunday and 4/20 have coincided several times before, predating the smokers' holiday, and it will happen again in 62 years.

This year will be the 13th time Easter has taken place on April 20 since 1630, and it won’t fall on that date again until 2087, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Here’s a list of years when Easter fell on 4/20:

Why is 420 the number for smoking weed?

One of the most popular theories behind why April 20th became a day for getting high is a story of a group of high school students in the 1970s in California, who allegedly would meet to smoke pot every day at 4:20 p.m. But there’s little hard evidence to support this, and it isn’t likely that a group of high school kids habitually smoking pot in the ‘70s could lead to “420” being a code for getting high across the globe.

Although a group of Californians published a slew of documents to prove this theory’s legitimacy, it’s hard to tell if it’s truly the origin of the holiday or using “420” as slang for smoking pot.

According to a Vox article on the origins of the holiday, “One common belief is that 420 was the California police or penal code for marijuana, but there’s no evidence to support those claims.”

So if it isn’t super-secret police-speak for illegal consumption of marijuana, it isn’t Bob Marley’s birthday and it wasn’t invented by a group of teenage stoners in the ‘70s, then what is it?

The answer isn't clear. No one knows why or how, but April 20th is simply a day to smoke pot if you enjoy it, or advocate for its legalization if you’re a smoker who lives in a state where marijuana is only allowed with the possession of a medical marijuana card.

Is recreational weed legal in Florida?

No. Only medical marijuana and low-level THC products are legal in Florida.

Delta 9 THC and delta 8 THC products, which some refer to as “diet weed,” are legal in Florida. And medical marijuana is legal, but only to those who have a license for it and purchase their weed from licensed medical dispensaries.

Although you’re not legally allowed to buy and smoke real pot in Florida without a medical marijuana license, you can buy low-level delta 8 and delta 9 THC products from your local smoke shop. The only requirement to buy low-level THC products in Florida is being 21 or older.
