The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) said Tuesday it is shuttering its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) office in cooperation with an executive order by President Donald Trump.
Trump in a recent executive order directed government DEI offices to close and threatened to withhold funding to those which do not comply. NASA was among the first agencies to obey the order, acknowledging in a memo its programs had wasted valuable resources.
PBS said in a statement to The National News Desk (TNND) it would comply with the president’s directive.
“In order to best ensure we are in compliance with the President’s executive order around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion we have closed our DEI office,” the broadcaster wrote. “The staff members who served in that office are leaving PBS. We will continue to adhere to our mission and values. PBS will continue to reflect all of America and remain a welcoming place for everyone.”

PBS is the latest to take action following Trump’s executive order. The University of North Carolina (UNC) system on Wednesday also cited the order in an announcement that it would cease requiring completion of DEI courses for graduation.
“Indeed, right now—at this very hour—there are thousands of researchers in the University working to improve the health and wellbeing of everyday North Carolinians and people across the globe,” UNC General Counsel Andrew Tripp wrote in a memo. “Today’s action ensures that their work will continue unabated in an emerging regulatory landscape.”
The Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) earlier this month scaling back DEI efforts as a major win for reducing taxpayer expenses. In a post shared via X, the presidential advisory committee touted over $1 billion in savings from cutting DEI-related contracts.
Democrats have voiced opposition to the Trump administration cutting back on DEI efforts. House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., told reporters last week diversity, equity and inclusion are “American values.”
“The motto of the United States of America is ‘e pluribus unum,’ – out of many, one. That’s diversity,” Rep. Jeffries said. “The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution—one of the most important amendments in our country—provides equal protection under the law. That’s equity."
