As UNFCCC Climate negotiations (COP29) kick off, Friends of the Earth International together with groups from Demand Climate Justice highlight the need to deliver crucial climate finance whilst warning of the looming threat of a carbon markets decision.

“Decisions at COP29 threaten to open the floodgates for a global carbon market that would have devastating impacts on communities in the Global South, on Indigenous Peoples, and on small peasant farmers first and foremost. Carbon markets are not climate finance, and we cannot accept these neocolonial schemes to be propped up as a success of COP29.”

Setting the tone for the already controversial negotiations, false solutions, including geoengineering, offsets, and net zero pledges, backed largely by rich nations and corporations are on the table at COP29. Deemed the “climate finance COP” by observers, civil society groups following the #PayUp for climate finance campaign are demanding that rich countries commit at least $5 trillion annually to the Global South through public finance mechanisms to repair the climate debt owed to developing countries.

“This commitment isn’t charity; it’s reparations for a climate debt long overdue. Grants must replace loans, and loss and damage funding must also be scaled up tremendously to meet the needs of impacted countries in the Global South. Debt cancellation for the Global South is essential to break cycles of injustice. The money exists: redirecting funds from global military spending and climate destruction are paths forward.” Meena Raman

As civil society groups continue to stand firmly for climate justice at COP29, they gather tomorrow afternoon, Monday 11 November for a demonstration, centering Palestinian voices and highlighting the interconnectivity between global movements advocating for Indigenous rights, land rights, the fight against the fossil fuel industry, climate colonialism and imperialism. This comes as peoples and territory continue to be sacrificed to protect the interests of transnational corporations and their profits.

“Israel’s genocide in Gaza has caused devastating human loss and lasting environmental destruction. Israeli operations have polluted land, blocked water access, and created food scarcity, all in violation of Palestinians’ right to a healthy environment. Israeli crime should be recognised by the international community and at COP for the ecocide it is.”
