Democrats have been rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden officially announced that he was ending his reelection bid on Sunday.

Following weeks of mounting pressure from within his own party, the president said that he believed it was "in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down."

Biden immediately threw his support behind Harris, offering her "his full support and endorsement," and adding that choosing her to be his vice president was "the best decision I've made."

Harris thanked Biden for the endorsement and said that her intention is to "earn and win" the party's nomination.

A large number of elected Democrats have since endorsed Harris to become the presidential candidate, including 10 of the party's 23 governors, 32 of its 47 senators, and 153 of its 212 members of the House of Representatives.

Several more Democrats released statements of support without explicitly endorsing Harris.

Harris must now work to shore up support and secure the party's nomination, just four weeks before their convention in August.
