J.D. Vance Backs 'National Standard' for Abortions [1]

J.D. Vance, the Republican candidate for the Senate in Ohio, said he was "totally fine" with "some minimum national standard" of abortion restrictions, during a debate on Monday night.

Vance, a venture capitalist and the author of Hillbilly Elegy, made the comments during a contentious first debate against Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan. The pair are facing off for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Rob Portman.

During the debate, Ryan said he supports codifying the abortion rights established in Roe v. Wade, which was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in late June.

And he sought to paint Vance as an extremist on abortion.

"We read at least a couple [of] articles every week of young people underage girls who have been raped, or women who have had significant problems with their pregnancy, not be able to get help in the state. They gotta go to Indiana. They gotta go to Illinois," Ryan said.

"And that's not good enough for J.D. Vance. He supports a national abortion ban in which he wants women to have to get a passport and go to Canada. We've got to have some moderation on this issue. He's got a very extreme position."

Later, Vance didn't say whether he would support Sen. Lindsey Graham's proposed national abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with some exceptions.

"My view on this is, generally speaking, Ohio's gonna wanna have different abortion laws than California, than Texas, and I think Ohio should have that right," he said.

But he added that "some minimum national standard is totally fine with me."

Vance was later asked about past comments he has made on abortion. In 2021, he said "two wrongs don't make a right" when asked if abortion laws should make exceptions for rape and incest.

On Monday night, Vance said he is "pro-life," but he has "always believed in reasonable exceptions."

He said he agreed with Ryan that a 10-year-old rape victim should not have had to leave Ohio for an abortion—a case that made national headlines after the fall of Roe.

"I have said repeatedly on the record, that I think that that girl should be able to get an abortion if she and her family so choose to do so," he said,

But he added that the suspect was in the country illegally and accused Ryan of supporting policies that led to the girl's rape.

"That poor girl was raped by an illegal alien, somebody that should have never been in this state in the first place," he said.

"You voted so many times against the border wall funding, so many times for amnesty, Tim. If you had done your job, she would have never been raped in the first place."

Ryan and Vance's campaigns have been contacted for further comment.
