Bowman, Latimer clash on taxes in NY-16 debate [1]
['News Staff']
Date: 2024-06
Incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman and challenger George Latimer, the two-term Westchester County Executive, faced off in a debate Monday night, discussing issues including abortion access, safety, immigration, infrastructure, and hate crimes.
The candidates clashed most pointedly on the issue of taxes. Bowman criticized Latimer for opposing President Joe Biden's plan to raise taxes on the wealthy, arguing that it was "unacceptable for any Democrat to be in this seat or any seat across the country."
"My opponent does not support President Biden's initiative to raise taxes on the wealthy," Bowman said. "He supports Donald Trump's tax cuts, which is unacceptable for any Democrat to be in this seat or any seat across the country."
Latimer countered that Bowman was "misrepresenting" his position on taxes, accusing him of fabricating information about his stances.
The candidates will face off in the Democratic primary on June 25.
