Statement from Kelly Flynn, CEO, on the 20th Clinic Anniversary — A Woman's Choice [1]

['Amber Gavin']

Date: 2022-02-04

Read at a press conference in Tallahassee, FL outside of the State Senate building on February 2, 2022.

Good morning, my name is Kelly Flynn. Twenty years ago today I founded A Woman's Choice of Jacksonville, an independent abortion clinic.

The outcomes of a 15-week ban in Florida will be dire for those with undesired pregnancies seeking abortion care AND for people who wish to have a child but carry fatal pregnancy complications undiscoverable or undiagnosable until 15-weeks or later in the pregnancy.

People have and will always need abortion as an option. This was true 20 years ago, it is true today, and it will be true in the future. Abortions allow people to make fundamental decisions about their health, futures, education, career, lives, and the lives of the children that they want to have.

This 15-week abortion ban forces pregnant people to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term against their will. Floridians want access to safe, legal abortion and to protect this extremely personal healthcare decision. For the government of this state to barge into the most intimate of personal decisions is an overreach of staggering proportions; it threatens Floridians’ freedom of bodily autonomy, freedom of religion, and invades upon their medical care and the doctor-patient relationship.

Floridians want legislators to focus on strengthening our economy; protecting our communities from Covid; strengthening our health care system, not passing arbitrary abortion bans that help no one and cause nothing but grief and pain for your constituents.

Those who hold objections to abortion as a remedy already have the greatest legal tool available to them—their freedom of choice. The proposed 15-week ban selectively targets only a fraction of Floridians for adverse treatment under the law, denying them that same freedom of choice. A Woman’s Choice of Jacksonville is proud to be an abortion provider because we know that abortion saves lives.
