Advertising: ‘Gold Water’ for Republicans [1]
[]
Date: 1964-08-31
What soft drink would have emblazoned on its label, “The Right Drink for the Conservative Taste”?
What drink, indeed, but “Gold Water”?
Gold Water, known in some Republican circles as “the cause that refreshes,” was the brainchild of a Columbus, Ga., lawyer named William Cain. The inspiration came to Mr. Cain last February when Senator Barry Goldwater came to make a Law Day speech in Columbus.
Mr. Cain, an ardent Goldwater supporter, decided it would be a good idea to market a soft drink named after the Presidential candidate. He formed the Gold Water Distributing Company in Columbus, and by April, the company was distributing cans of gold‐colored, ginger ale and citrus‐flavored sod water called Gold Water.
Canned under contract with Royal Crown Cola and independent canners in five areas throughout the country and marketed in 42 staes, some 230,000 cases of 12‐ounce cans have ben sold since April.
