Sullivan native given key role in Iraq: Steven Casteel named senior adviser to interior minister [1]

Steven Casteel, a 1967 Sullivan High School graduate, accepted the appointment as senior adviser to the minister of interior of Iraq. His responsibilities include assisting the Iraqis with their police and emergency forces, helping with border patrol and assisting the Iraqis with immigration.After participating last week in a two-day conference in Madrid to discuss reconstruction of Iraq, Casteel is now in Baghdad working as the senior adviser.In May, President Bush declared the war over with Iraq, but the dangers continue and are evident by the number of allied soldiers who have been wounded or killed by hostile forces.The situation in Iraq concerns Casteel, said his wife Lynn during a telephone interview from their home in Fairfax, Va., but she added that her husband is no rookie when it comes to serving in potentially hostile areas of the world. Steven Casteel worked in the Drug Enforcement Administration for more than 30 years."He was in the jungles of Bolivia for six months one time," Lynn Casteel said. "He is really looking forward to the challenges of the job in Iraq. He has a lot of high hopes that he can help the situation."Steven Casteel had just retired as head of intelligence at the DEA. Two weeks later, White House officials offered him the position in Iraq, so Casteel put retirement on hold.Casteel's cousin, Marclyn Park, still lives in Sullivan. She wasn't surprised he was selected for this position."He has always been a real go-getter, especially in his work with the DEA," she said.
