The following is a statement from Verda J. Hicks, MD, FACOG, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG):

“The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act plays a critical role in protecting the health and improving the lives and well-being of people during and after pregnancy and in ensuring that people are able to continue working without jeopardizing their health. Families should have peace of mind that they won’t face financial hardship due to pregnancy-related job loss, and workers who are pregnant should not have to fear compromising their own health and well-being to maintain their employment. Pregnancy is physiologically demanding and many of the medical conditions related to pregnancy necessitate reasonable accommodations for people after their pregnancy has ended.

“ACOG is grateful that the administration has taken a comprehensive approach to medical conditions that may be aggravated by pregnancy. This broad, compassionate application of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will ensure that fewer workers are subject to unfair treatment, recrimination, or retaliation as a result of or after a pregnancy. Reasonable accommodations for anyone whose health has been compromised by pregnancy-related conditions are fair to employees and critical for the well-being and recovery of pregnant people.

“ACOG thanks the administration for its ongoing acknowledgement of people’s complex needs during and after pregnancy.”
