SUNY chancellor explains proposal to close SUNY Downstate [1]

['Spectrum News Staff', 'Published Pm Et Feb.']

SUNY Downstate Medical Center is facing possible closures under a state proposal.

The state said the move is driven by too few patients, operating losses of about $100 million and an outdated building in need of repairs.

SUNY Downstate is the only state-run hospital in the city.

Patients also say the loss of the only kidney transplant program in Brooklyn and access to health care for low income Medicaid patients would be devastating to city residents in need of care.

SUNY Chancellor John King joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to explain what comes next.
