‘This is America, and no one is coming’: East Palestine locals say they’re sick from chemical exposure, and no one is helping [1]

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Residents of East Palestine who live near the site of a train derailment say they continue to experience strange illnesses that they believe are connected to the epic release of toxic chemicals along the state’s eastern border.
About one year ago, officials with rail company Norfolk Southern and the state jointly agreed to execute a “controlled burn” of five tank cars within the derailed train that were carrying about 116,000 gallons of vinyl chloride, a hazardous chemical used in the PVC plastics manufacturing process. The burn, the officials said, avoided a possible – and potentially more dangerous – explosion.
