Rep. Walberg endorses Rogers for Senate in Michigan [1]

Date: 2023-12-04

Washington ― U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers has picked up the first endorsement this cycle by a Republican member of Michigan's congressional delegation, U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg.

Walberg, the delegation's most senior member, previously served with Rogers in the U.S. House before Rogers retired in 2015 after seven terms.

"Mike Rogers has dedicated his life to serving and fighting for the people of Michigan, and I’m happy to offer my full endorsement in his race for the U.S. Senate," Walberg said in a statement.

"Mike is doing everything it takes to defeat the Democrats, take on Biden’s policies that are hurting families, and unite Republicans in November. His experience and leadership will ensure that he’s effective on day one, and he’ll be the fighter that Michigan has been missing in the U.S. Senate."

Rogers represented a swing U.S. House district in mid-Michigan for 14 years, four of them as chair of the powerful House intelligence committee that oversees 16 intelligence agencies.

Others running for the Republican nomination for Senate include former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer of Grand Rapids Township, former Detroit police Chief James Craig of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park businessman Sandy Pensler.

Michigan will have an open Senate seat because U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, said she won't run for another term in 2024.

On the Democratic side, three-term U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Holly, actor Hill Harper of Detroit and former state Rep. Leslie Love of Detroit are seeking their party's nomination, among others. Slotkin has received endorsements from U.S. Reps. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, and Hillary Scholten, D-Grand Rapids.

Republicans have not won a Michigan U.S. Senate race since 1994, when former Michigan Republican Party Chairman Spencer Abraham defeated former Democratic U.S. Rep. Bob Carr.

The last time Michigan had a Senate race in 2020, incumbent U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, defeated James by 1.7 percentage points.
