BECKLEY (WVNS) – Frigid temperatures and snowy conditions are not only dangerous to those who are traveling, but they are extremely hazardous to homeless people as well.

Some people are even without the proper clothing and food to keep themselves warm when winter weather hits the area.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, more than 580,000 Americans were experiencing homelessness in 2022.

When temperatures are dropping and snow is falling, those that are homeless are at an elevated risk for hypothermia, frostbite, and numerous other health hazards.

Proper clothing, food and shelter are essential in winter weather.

Low temperatures and snow can make the life of a homeless person harsh. Organizations are available to help those that need many essential items. During the winter months, organizations like One Voice in Beckley are there to help.

Melonie Terry, Program Director at One Voice, says One Voice offers many clothing items.

“During this time of year, obviously the weather. Many of them do not have the appropriate apparel. They don’t have coats, they don’t have gloves, socks, scarves, or hats. A lot of times we do receive donations from the public” said Terry to 59News.

Along with food and clothing, housing is a high priority for those that are homeless.

Terry describes the goal of One Voice for those that are homeless.

“Find some permanent, stable housing for him or her. To kind of get them stable, back on their feet. Assess their needs, whether that be employment, some type of mental health, some type of medical care, maybe mental health behavioral care” said Terry.
