Don’t let Big Oil off the hook
For more than two years, people throughout Canada have been calling on the federal government to make good on its promise to cap and cut the oil industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. We won’t back down until this industry reduces its outsized emissions.
The oil industry is Canada’s largest and fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions and has repeatedly shown its unwillingness to voluntarily reduce them. The industry is making record-breaking profits while fuelling the climate and affordability crisis. This must stop!
During the United Nations climate conference, COP28, the federal government released a framework that will guide development of the regulation to cap oil and gas emissions and is asking for feedback. This is your chance to steer this key regulation in the right direction.
Specifically, we are calling for the emissions cap regulation to:
Fast-track the emissions cap regulation so that the draft is released as soon as possible and is finalized and in force by 2025. Later will be too late to meet our 2030 climate target. Begin reducing emissions immediately with a target that is in line with what is set in Canada’s Emissions Reduction Plan. Further ambition will be needed to ensure the industry is doing its fair share. Remove the loopholes that allow industry to bypass real emissions reduction through offsets and a decarbonization fund. If industry is allowed to buy its way into compliance, emissions will still go into the atmosphere and accelerate the climate crisis.
