Majority of Americans, Republicans Support Israel Ceasefire: Poll [1]

The majority of Americans, both Democrat and Republican, think the U.S. government should call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, according to a new poll.

A Data for Progress poll conducted between October 18 and 19 found that 66% of Americans support a U.S. call for a ceasefire.

Democrats were the most in favor at 80%, however, the majority of Republicans and independents also supported a ceasefire at 56% and 57%, respectively.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes noted on Tuesday that despite the results showing public support from a majority of Americans, “calling for a cease-fire is still a distinctly minority opinion inside Congress as a whole,” with not a single senator supporting the idea.

“There’s only 18 members of Congress that have signed on to a resolution calling for a cease-fire. All of them are Democrats,” reported Hayes, who added, “It does seem at least more popular with the American public than members of Congress.”

Protesters disrupted Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s testimony in the Senate on Tuesday. The protesters shouted, “Ceasefire now!” and held up their hands, which were painted blood red.

During his testimony, Blinken rejected calls for a ceasefire and agreed with Sen. Susan Collins’ (R-ME) assertion that a ceasefire “would be a strategic victory for Hamas.”

Blinken told Collins, “When it comes to a ceasefire, in this moment, you’re exactly right. That would simply consolidate what Hamas has been able to do, and allow it to remain where it is and potentially repeat what it did another day.”

More than 8,000 people — the majority women and children — have been killed in Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza this month, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Israel launched its airstrike campaign after Hamas killed more than a thousand Israeli civilians in a series of attacks on October 7.
