Polls: With Trump Above 50%, GOP Debate Is Contest for Second [1]

Here’s a sobering fact for the Republican candidates on tonight’s debate stage: Almost every day since early April, Donald Trump has drawn at least 50% support in aggregated polls of GOP voters nationally.

That leaves the eight contenders in tonight’s debate tussling over only a limited portion of the Republican voter pool. Given Trump’s formidable lead, the contest as of now is essentially a battle for second place.

A poll, of course, is just a snapshot of the moment, and fortunes could change. But so far, most of the GOP contenders can point only to one bit of good news in the national polls: The role of chief rival to Trump appears to be up for grabs.
