Last year’s highest paid hospital executive was Dr. Steven Corwin. The New York–Presbyterian chief executive earned nearly $10.7 million in 2020, making him the highest-paid hospital executive in the metropolitan area during the first year of the pandemic. Corwin took the No. 3 slot this year, bringing in a total of $8.2 million, behind Thomas Biga, president of the hospital division at RWJBarnabas Health, who made $10.4 million.

The top 35 hospital executives made an average of $4.8 million, a 7% increase from 2020’s record-breaking figures. Total compensation across the list exceeded $168 million.

Of the top 35 executives, eight work at RWJBarnabas. Four of the executives work at Montefiore and New York–Presbyterian, and three at a Northwell Health entity.

Joseph Levine, chief of electrophysiology at St. Francis Hospital, was the highest paid doctor in the metro area, with a total cash compensation of more than $6.7 million. Bryan Kelly, chief of sports and shoulder services at the Hospital for Special Surgery, was next among doctors, earning $5.9 million during the 2021 fiscal year.

The average compensation for doctors was a little more than $3 million, and the total compensation across those on the list was $106.6 million.

Hospitals were more equally represented on the top-paid-doctors list. Five work at HSS, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering and North Shore University Hospital. Four work at St. Francis Hospital. Just one doctor, Anroy Ottley, chief of robotic surgery, was on the doctor’s list from RWJBarnabas.
