An American city has become "one of the first" places in the world to become "uninhabitable without aircon", a climate expert has claimed.

Laura Tobin, 41, is a meteorologist and weather broadcaster for ITV’s daily news programme Good Morning Britain.

And the English presenter boldly claimed that Phoenix, Arizona is utterly unlivable without having the AC cranked, she said on Wednesday morning’s programme.

Currently, almost one in three Americans are under some form of heat warning thanks to the deadly La Niña.

The scientist - who abhors the phrase ‘weather girl’ - has been keeping the UK informed about the heatwaves across the US and Europe, while Britain dodges the scorching sun.

“First of all we start off with the extreme heat across America”, Laura said as she pointed to her luminous, multi-coloured map.

“The heat dome is out towards the west, the jet stream divides the cool and the warm.”

Laura noted the record-breaking temperatures in Phoenix, which is currently on day 19 of temperatures surplus of 43C.

Its pavements have been hitting a staggering 71C, while its evenings haven’t dipped below 35C for days.

She added: “Phoenix has broken a record, they have had 19 days where they have had consecutive temperatures above 43 Celsius, 110 Fahrenheit.”

And Laura made a audacious claim about the harsh conditions in the Arizona-based city.

“They are one of the first cities in the world to become uninhabitable unless they have air conditioning. And many areas don’t”, she added.

While some viewers expressed genuine concern over the world’s freak heat, climate deniers slammed the presenter for “fear-mongering”.

On Wednesday morning, Laura was under the cosh as ITV viewers branded her comments as spreading hysteria.

One person Tweeted: “If I suffered from anxiety and saw the graphics of these maps I'd be scared to leave the house. Why [are] they fear-mongering over the weather?”

It comes as Arizona’s more southerly cousin, Texas, recorded its first death linked to the searing heatwave.

Victor Ramos, 67, from Houston, died of accidental hyperthermia on June 24, a medical examiner said.
