Execution By Taliban: Crushed Under Wall [1]
['The Associated Press']
Date: 1999-01-16
Thousands of people watched today as a Taliban tank knocked over a 15-foot brick wall, sending it crashing down on a 60-year-old man sentenced to death for sexually attacking a boy.
Also today, the hands and feet of a number of thieves were amputated at another location, the main stadium of Afghanistan's beleaguered capital, Kabul.
The Taliban executed Shuma Khan near a damaged building where a wall was still standing. He had been convicted of sodomy for the attack on the boy, 12, in a hotel in Maidan Shahr, about 18 miles outside Kabul.
The man was found dead when the rubble was cleared away a half hour later.
The Taliban, who have imposed their brand of harsh Islamic law on the 90 percent of Afghanistan ruled by the Taliban, say homosexuality is a capital offense and punishable by the wall-toppling method. If the convicted person survives, the sentence is commuted, according to Taliban law. Several people have been sentenced to death by this means. Two have survived.
