Colorado Gov. Jared Polis appointed Republican state Sen. Kevin Van Winkle as the Douglas County commissioner for District 3 on Tuesday.

Van Winkle won the seat on the county’s board of commissioners in November and would have taken office in January, but former Commissioner Lora Thomas, a Republican, resigned on Dec. 6. The Douglas County GOP opted not to have a special vacancy election to replace Thomas for the remaining month of her term, so Polis was able to appoint Van Winkle to fill the gap. The appointment is effective immediately.

Thomas cited “four years of hell” from fellow commissioners Abe Laydon and George Teal as reason for her early departure. That includes what she called an order to “evict” her from her county office space so Van Winkle could move in six weeks before his term starts.

Van Winkle was appointed to his state Senate seat in June 2022, and won election to a four-year term later that year. He previously served for nearly eight years in the state House of Representatives. Last month, he defeated his Democratic opponent for the Douglas County commissioner seat with about 58% of the vote.

A vacancy committee will meet to pick Van Winkle’s replacement in the Senate. It is one of three expected vacancy committees to replace senators at the start of the upcoming legislative session. Other committees will decide on replacements for Democratic Sen. Chris Hansen, who is taking a job in the private sector, and Democratic Sen. Janet Buckner. Hansen and Buckner both won reelection in January.
