Arctic cold front to bring dangerously low temperatures to Denver [1]

['Lindsey Toomer', 'More From Author', '- December']

Date: 2022-12

With an arctic cold front set to arrive in Denver Wednesday night, the city will open a 24-hour warming center at the Denver Coliseum to support anyone in need of a warm place to stay.

All of Denver’s open recreation centers and libraries will also be available during regular business hours as warming centers. The extreme nature of temperatures predicted can quickly lead to hypothermia, frostbite and carbon monoxide poisoning, meaning staying inside and warm is crucial.

Russell Danielson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, told Newsline an “abnormally strong” pressure system is coming down to Denver from northern Canada. On Wednesday night, the low temperature forecast is -15 degrees Fahrenheit and could only get up to -1 degree Thursday during the day before dropping back down to as low as -15 degrees again. Denver could also see 2 to 6 inches of snow Wednesday, which could lead to hazardous travel conditions for rush hour as wind blows the snow around.

Wind chills in Denver could be as low as -35 degrees. Danielson said frostbite is possible when skin is exposed to these temperatures after five to 10 minutes and encouraged anyone who does need to go outside to cover their body as much as possible with warm layers.

Anyone who plans to drive in the Denver area is encouraged to maintain a full tank of gas and to keep extra blankets in their car in case of a breakdown, as well as jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, bottled water and non-perishable snacks. The city’s Department of Public Health and Environment also encourages residents to stock up on important supplies in case they’re stuck at home for several days.

Danielson said the storm should pass through after a few days, with temperatures expected to rise back up to as high as 18 degrees Friday.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock is due to hold a news conference Wednesday with additional information on the city’s cold weather sheltering efforts. Denver is continuing to see an influx of migrants into the city and will work to keep as many people sheltered from the cold as possible.
