Farewell to "Faerie Tale Theatre's" Shelley Duvall [1]

['Ellsworth Toohey']

Date: 2024-07-11

Heeeeere's Shelley! Or should I say, there goes Shelley? Shelley Duvall, that wide-eyed waif who haunted the Overlook Hotel with me, has checked out for good. Kicked the bucket on July 11, 2024, in some podunk Texas town. She was 75, can you believe it? Time sure flies when you're not chopping down doors with an axe.

Born July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth. Texas girl through and through. But let me tell you, she was anything but ordinary. Shelley was like a walking, talking funhouse mirror. All big eyes and sharp angles. Made her perfect for playing weirdos and kooks.

Bobby Altman spotted her first. Smart guy. Cast her in Brewster McCloud back in '70. But it was Kubrick, that sadistic genius, who really put her through the wringer in The Shining. Boy, did she scream. Over and over and over. Take after take after take. I almost felt bad for her. Almost.

She played Olive Oyl too. Perfect casting if you ask me. Looked like she could blow away in a stiff breeze.

Later on, she got into making kiddie shows. Faerie tales and bedtime stories. Quite the change from running from ax-wielding maniacs, huh?

Well, Shelley, looks like you've finally escaped the Overlook for good. No more maze for you, kid. Rest in peace, or whatever it is you kooky actresses do in the afterlife. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but you? You were never dull, Shelley. Never dull.
