Remember the 1990s' Digital Compact Cassette? Still going strong in 2023... for some [1]

They are still making cassettes but unlike vinyl there are a serious drawback: no one is making good quality players with Dolby NR anymore which means you are limited to finding vintage working players (which are around if you look)…I mean they are still making very good vinyl turntables. and the tapes arrant as good as they used to be (again the lack of Dolby NR and often cheaper magnetic tape) I guess none of that matters if it’s just a novelty for you and you’re just collecting an object you’re not really gonna listen to…

I say this as someone who grew up with tapes and still has a soft spot for them. People think of them as sounding terrible but that has a lot to do with the tape quality and the quality of the recorder and player. A high bias tape recorded at a proper level on a deck that can do Dolby NR correctly can sound pretty good. I won’t say as good as digital,… but pretty dang good
