BFI Revealed: the results of the 2022 Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time... For the first time in the poll’s 70-year history, a film by a female filmmaker takes the top spot: Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles.
And at least a few cineastes are getting pissy about wokeness. It’s been rapidly shooting up the poll over the decades, #173 in ‘92, #73 in ‘02, #36 in ‘12, so its arrival at the top may be unexpected, but not impossibly unlikely.
Haven’t seen it myself, although I’ve thought Akerman has made some outstanding documentaries.
