How does sand accumulate in backpacks? A question for the ages

On January 27, Daniel M. Lavery tweeted about retrieving a pen from the bottom of his backpack, "where the sand resides," and a great many people replied with astonishment that they had thought they were the only ones with "the sand" in their backpacks.

when you know there's a pen in your bag but you've swiped through all the empty space….you know you're going to have to scratch the bottom of the backpack, where the sand resides, before you can retreat with Pen…that's a bad day. i don't want to fill my nails with the sand — Daniel M.
