How a terrible boss accidentally inspired the snarky cross-stitch genre
2021-09-20 00:00:00
Subversive Cross Stitch has been around for many years but I never knew its origin story until this week. Its founder, Julie Jackson, recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to expand her business and shared how she turned a bad work situation into a crafty empire. Love it!
Almost 20 years ago, I was stuck at a desk job with a horrible bully of a boss who lived to make my life miserable.
I needed some art therapy, so I stopped by a craft store on the way home one day. I didn't find much that inspired me, it was all pretty traditional and dull. I decided to buy a wedding sampler kit—it had a very ornate border of lilies and an alphabet chart so you could put the names of the bride and groom in the center for a personal touch. Instead, I simply stitched the word FUCK in the center.
I had no idea I was starting a whole new genre of snarky cross stitch.
