Arizona’s former Attorney General, Republican Mark Brnovich will be the next U.S. ambassador to Serbia.

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump announced the appointment, hailing Brnovich as a candidate who will prioritize the country’s interests in the central Balkan Peninsula.

“Mark is a proud Veteran of the Army National Guard, and previously served as Attorney General for the Great State of Arizona. As the son of refugees who fled communism, Mark will be a strong advocate for Freedom, and always put AMERICA FIRST,” Trump wrote

Brnovich was born to Serbian parents and has said he visits the country as often as he can. His mother left Yugoslavia in the 1950s, shortly after a new communist government took power.

The Detroit native served as the Grand Canyon State’s chief legal officer from 2015 to 2023, under then Gov. Doug Ducey. In 2021, he launched a campaign for U.S. Senate, but lost the primary election after Trump criticized him for not overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election. At the time, Brnovich strongly dismissed accusations of election fraud. Later, during his bid for a congressional seat, Brnovich reversed his position and mobilized his office to conduct an investigation of the results, releasing a report that made evidence-free claims about “vulnerabilities” in the election process.

Brnovich replaces long-time diplomat Christopher Robert Hill, who departed his position in January, and inherits the responsibility of overseeing diplomatic relations in a country whose support of the Trump administration has recently drawn backlash. Earlier this week, thousands rallied against plans, to build a luxury complex where a former army headquarters in Belgrade was destroyed by a NATO bombing in 1999. A 175-room Trump hotel is slated to be built atop the ruins, and the project is being financed by a firm set up by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Critics of the plan are demanding that the headquarter’s status as a heritage site be restored, instead. Public anger against the construction project has become a flashpoint in a larger anti-corruption movement against President Aleksandar Vucic’s administration.
