WASHINGTON — Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs’ staff extinguished a small fire in his Capitol Hill office Thursday morning after a space heater ignited.
The fire caused smoke to spread to parts of the large office building that includes other lawmakers’ offices and committee rooms.
“Earlier this morning, a space heater caught fire under one of my staffer’s desks. Fortunately, no one was harmed,” Biggs wrote in a social media post. “Thanks to the quick thinking of my staff and interns in the office, the flames were quickly extinguished and emergency personnel promptly arrived on scene.”
District of Columbia Fire and EMS wrote in their own social media post that responding firefighters “found a small space heater in the hall extinguished with dry chem prior to arrival, with no extension” and that they aired out the remaining smoke.
U.S. House lawmakers and committees are housed throughout three office buildings just outside the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The Cannon office building, which hosts Biggs’ office, sits in a row with the Longworth and Rayburn buildings.
Lawmakers are typically assigned to their personal offices based on seniority and a lottery system, which incoming House members participated in on Thursday morning.
