Republicans launch campaign against new state flag [1]

The Minnesota Republican party is launching an all-out effort against the adoption of the new state flag, fundraising off of the old flag and signaling that the new state emblems will be a new front in the so-called culture wars.
The State Emblems Redesign Commission adopted final designs for a new state flag and seal in December. The DFL-controlled state Legislature voted last session to replace the old emblem designs, which depicted a farmer and a Native American person.
Critics of the former seal — which was featured on the old flag — said it was poorly designed and depicted a white settler encroaching on Native territory.
Republican Party Chair David Hann and Deputy Chair Donna Bergstrom released a statement Wednesday calling for the Legislature to reverse the adoption of the new flag.
“As a Native American and tribal member, it is exhausting to see Native Americans once again bearing the brunt of the short-sighted eradication of our shared history,” Bergstrom said. “Keeping the current flag would have been a powerful acknowledgment from the Walz administration and the DFL that our Native contributions are valued.”
Republican non-voting members of the flag redesign commission said in December they were exploring ways to prevent the new flag from being officially adopted.
The Republican party launched a website dedicated to the campaign Wednesday. They are selling t-shirts on the website featuring the old flag.
