The 2021 refund must be filed with the Minnesota Department of Revenue by Aug. 15. The 2022 refund is due in August, 2024. The average refund is about $1,100 for homeowners and $730 for renters, according to the Department of Revenue.
Over 877,000 Minnesotans have filed their 2021 property tax refunds to date, totaling about $827 million in refunds so far. Renters who have already filed have started receiving their refunds and homeowners will get their refund in late August, the Department of Revenue said.
The Minnesota Legislature this year changed the renter’s property tax rebate into an income tax credit. Minnesota is among a handful of states that gives renters a tax refund, but a lot of renters are unaware of it and never claim it.
The 2023 renters credit will become an income tax credit that you can claim with your tax returns in the spring of 2024.
