Coach Reeve: Let voters have their say on a Minnesota ERA

Today, on International Women’s Day, I am honored to stand with ERA Minnesota and thousands of other Minnesotans who want to vote on an Equal Rights Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution. To make this a reality, we need the Minnesota House and Senate to put it on the ballot.

As everyone knows, I not only have a passion for winning on the court, but a passion for championing issues that have long affected women off the court.

Through the years, I have spoken often about the need for gender equality. Something I am always struck by is how many people — men and women — believe that in Minnesota, and in the United States, women are guaranteed equal rights and protections under the law. When I share that no such protections exist in Minnesota Constitution or the U.S. Constitution, they are incredulous. “That can’t possibly be,” they proclaim.

Well, it’s true. And it is past time to change that. It’s important to note that 100% of those people I have spoken to about ERA would support an amendment enshrining gender equality into our state’s constitution.

I would like to thank those in our communities who have been fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment for half a century. Those who fought for me as a youngster, those who have fought on behalf of mothers, those who fight for their sisters, their daughters to have equal protection under the law. Your resilience is empowering.

Minnesota is my adopted home. I have always been so proud of our state in our capacity to be a leader on many important issues. It would make me proud once again for Minnesota to join the 26 other states in the U.S. to have added an Equal Rights Amendment to their state constitutions.

It is long past time to guarantee equal rights for all in the Minnesota state constitution.
