Minnesota summers could get 7 degrees hotter by 2100

Minnesota summers could get 7 degrees hotter in the next 80 years, according to a new study from the University of Minnesota.

Earlier studies have established that Minnesota’s winters are warming faster than any other state’s, and 13 times faster than our summers. This study suggests that summer warming will accelerate as Minnesota sees hotter temps across all seasons in the coming decades, as well as more rain and less snow.

“Early awareness and mitigation have the potential to preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations,” climate researcher Stefan Liess, who led the study, said in a news release. “Mitigation and adaptation strategies need to be put in place to address these future changes.”

Researchers hope the study will help communities make climate adaptation plans. They used several greenhouse gas emissions scenarios to create climate models for areas measuring 36 square miles, which is more detailed than most projections, according to a news release.

The researchers also found that rain is likely to increase significantly in the spring — by up to more than half an inch per day in northern Minnesota. As temperatures rise, snow depth is expected to decrease by more than 5 inches, and Minnesotans could see as many as 55 fewer days with snow cover.

Going forward, researchers use these results to project future crop yields and the frequency of extreme weather events. They’re also aiming to develop even more detailed projections of areas measuring 9 square miles.
