Minnesota’s COVID-19 surge stretches on

Minnesota reported 5,266 new COVID-19 cases Monday as the state’s fourth wave of the pandemic stretches on.
Minnesota continues to experience one of the nation’s worst COVID-19 outbreaks. Cases here are growing faster than anywhere else in the country, The New York Times reported Monday, with 67 new cases per 100,000 residents in the past week — far surpassing the national rate of 24 new cases per 100,000 residents.
The test positivity rate — which lags by a week — is nearing 10%, which state health officials designated the “high risk” threshold.
The surge continues to strain Minnesota’s hospitals as well, with 1,282 people hospitalized with COVID-19 Friday. That’s the highest number so far in 2021. In northeast Minnesota, there were no intensive care unit beds available, and just 12 were open in the metro area — or roughly 1% of the region’s hospital beds.
More than 3.5 million Minnesotans — or nearly 68% of the state’s population over age 5 — have at least one dose of vaccine, and 63.6% are fully vaccinated.
