Former DFL state representative Carly Melin will serve as chief of staff of the Senate DFL, according to a news release.

Melin, 36, served three terms in the Minnesota House representing parts of the Iron Range. She currently works as director of government affairs for the office of Attorney General Keith Ellison.

The Senate DFL has been reorganizing in recent weeks after Minority Leader Melisa López Franzen, DFL-Edina, was elected caucus leader in September, holding new leadership elections and staff changes.

“Carly brings significant legislative and leadership experience having served three terms in the Minnesota House of Representatives, including as Assistant Majority Leader,” López Franzen said in a statement. “She is a dedicated public servant who brings her extensive experience in building relationships with members and staff in both bodies of the state legislature, the executive branch, and state agencies, as well as experience leading and executing strategy to our work of advancing and expanding policy priorities aimed at improving the lives of all Minnesotans.”

Former Revenue Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly has been serving as interim chief of staff. Her last day will be Nov. 29.

Melin, an attorney, also has worked as an assistant county attorney in St. Louis County.
