Former Rep. Erin Maye Quade to run for Senate, challenging DFL incumbent

Former state representative and lieutenant governor candidate Erin Maye Quade is challenging a DFL incumbent for a Minnesota Senate seat.

If elected, Maye Quade would be the first Black woman and first openly gay woman to serve in the Senate. She is currently advocacy director for Gender Justice, which focuses on reproductive rights and gender equity.

Maye Quade, 35, is challenging Sen. Greg Clausen, DFL-Apple Valley, who is serving his third term. It is unclear if Clausen, 74, intends to run again. He did not immediately return a request for comment.

Maye Quade ran in 2018 as the endorsed candidate for lieutenant governor under former DFL-endorsed gubernatorial candidate, state Sen. Erin Murphy of St. Paul.

She said in an interview that the Legislature should lead on issues like systemic racism and climate change, as well as focus on effectively responding to the ongoing pandemic.

“This moment demands more than what we’ve been doing,” Maye Quade said. “It really does demand we have bold, visionary leaders.”
