Minnesota reported 3,882 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths over the weekend, according to data released Tuesday by the Minnesota Department of Health.
The state’s test positivity rate has remained above 5% for most of the month as the Delta variant causes a surge in cases in Minnesota and across the country.
Minnesota’s fourth wave of the pandemic is straining hospitals. On Monday, 589 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, 164 of them in intensive care units. The total number of hospitalizations has more than doubled since this time last month, when 241 people were hospitalized with COVID-19.
In the Twin Cities metro, just 1% of staffed hospital beds are available — about 40 beds. Roughly 3% of staffed beds — 21 beds total — are available in ICUs.
Nearly 1,200 people have gotten vaccinated at the State Fair, which started Thursday. A total of 3.3 million Minnesotans over 12 — 70.5% of the population — have received at least one dose of vaccine.
