COVID-19 hospitalizations spike across Minnesota

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Minnesota are nearing a record high for 2021, with 757 people hospitalized Friday, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
That’s nearly double the number of people hospitalized six weeks ago, and the highest total since early January this year. Of the people hospitalized Friday, 230 were in intensive care units.
The uptick in cases caused by the Delta variant is again stressing hospitals across the state. In the metro, northwestern and southeastern regions of Minnesota, more than 95% of ICU beds were full as of late last week. Just nine ICU beds were open in the Twin Cities, or roughly 1% of the staffed beds in the region.
Nearly all the metro’s non-ICU beds were full as well. About 98% of staffed beds were occupied, leaving about 68 available.
The state also reported 2,474 new COVID-19 cases Monday and 10 deaths, as the Delta variant continues to drive up case counts across the country. A total of 684,070 Minnesotans have tested positive for COVID-19 during the pandemic so far, and 7,993 have died.
Nearly 72% of Minnesotans over age 12 — 3.37 million people — have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 68% — 3.19 million people — are fully vaccinated.
