A slew of new laws will take effect starting Sunday, Aug. 1. Here are some compiled by the nonpartisan House of Representatives research office.

Dubbed the “Healthy Start Act,” pregnant inmates will be able to receive conditional release for up to a year after giving birth, as well as inmates who give birth within eight months of the date of being incarcerated. Inmates can also be conditionally released for the duration of the pregnancy and up to one year after giving birth.

Hospice workers will be required to be notified if a registered predatory offender is in their care.

Minnesota police can enforce Canadian orders for protection. Individuals with Canadian orders for protection could register those orders with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which would make those records available to law enforcement agencies in the state. Registration is not required and the order would still be enforced.

An insurer cannot cancel, change or deny a life insurance policy for a Minnesotan with a prescription for naloxone, an opioid antagonist sold under the brand Narcan, as well as other labels. Naloxone is used to reverse overdoses.

Banks and other financial institutions can charge service fees of up to $10 for bad checks, up from $4 previously.
