Minnesota reported 1,453 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths Friday.

The most recent wave of infections seems to be subsiding. The state’s test positivity rate — which lags a week — fell to 5.8% after reaching a high of 7.4% in early April. Officials are still concerned about the widely circulating B-117 variant, which is more contagious and can cause more severe illness.

Hospitalizations have also declined. There were 416 COVID-19 patients in the hospital and 144 in intensive care units Thursday, compared to nearly 700 people in hospitals and ICUs two weeks earlier.

A total of 585,677 Minnesotans have tested positive for COVID-19, and 7,216 have died.

More than 2.6 million Minnesotans — nearly 60% of people over 16 — have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 47% are fully vaccinated.
