Comments : I had this challenge for some
time, but didn't do much with it. I did the easy level
shortly after I got the challenge, made a few desultory
attempts at map 04, then went on to other things. After I
finished my incubus exams, I wanted to complete this one for
the sake of closure. It's really nice to get this done, as
it is the hardest title (of those currently available) to
achieve. By my calculations, maybe 26 percent of the
people who request this title actually complete it.
Map 03 - Not much to this one. I just let them kill each
other as much as possible.
Map 04 - Well, this was a real frustrating experience! I
don't know how many times I tried this thing - probably
about 30 or so - and it was getting pretty old, dying all
the time from some dumb-ass mistake or too many enemies and
not enough ammo. Most of the time, there was a trade-off
between ammo and health - use lots of ammo and save health,
but then there's no ammo to take on the chaingunners. Use
less ammo, then the imps, shotgun charlies and zombies
whittle you down to nothing so you can't even make it to the
chaingunner room. Thank God I didn't have this on my
incubus exam....
Map 28 - This was more fun than map 04, and I suspect took
fewer attempts (each attempt takes a long time, though). I
have to keep telling myself to play more aggressively. When
I did so (the beginning, the two arch vile room...) things
worked out pretty well. However, as I progressed through
the level, I became more and more nervous as it looked more
and more like I had a shot at finishing this thing. I was a
complete wreck when it was time to get the red key and face
the revenants, as you can see from my hesitation before
picking up the invulnerable. I got four of them, still had
an invulnerable and decent health and I just went to pieces.
Fell off the ledge, wasting precious moments of
invulnerability, couldn't hit the right keys... You can't
IMAGINE how tempted I was to just exit - the arch viles had
revived a few monsters which I had then dispatched, so I
could've exited with 100% kills if I'd left the last 3
revenants. I kept going, though. Then, down to the last
revenant, he really socks me so I loose over 50% health -
I'm down to 46% MAN did I want to just quit. But I had a
few bullets (15 I think) so I figured I'd try and shoot him.
If I ran out of ammo, I'd just leave. He died when I had 3
bullets left. So, this is truly 100% everybody dead. I
know some folks think you're a weenie if you use the arch
viles to revive some enemies and leave without doing
everybody - but if you want to do it that way, I say more
power to you. After all, it's only a game...
Free - I toyed around with the idea of doing map 07 - got a
few attempts of it - but I'm no Daniel Lindgren. So, I
thought I'd do something I haven't seen anywhere else -
submit one of my unsuccessful attempts at map 28. "Whoa -
what's the idea? Why would you DO such a thing?" Well,
part of the DooM and DHT experience that is seldom captured
in these exams is the SOOO CLOSE attempts we've all had that
makes this game so frustrating and fun. This particular
attempt is one revenant shy of completion - I die
chainsawing him when he gets around on me and drains away my
last bit of health. You can sense my amazement as I lie
there dead on the floor while he does his victory dance -
none of the other 10 revenants had managed to come around on
me like that. It's always the last one. Then I'm thinking
"GODDAMN - I had nearly 60 bullets - I could've shot the
bozo to death from a safe place!" In some ways, this is a
better lmp than my successful version (it's shorter, for one
thing: 47m.56s. as opposed to 59m.25s.). I tend to be more
aggressive in this one, making for a more exciting lmp.

('Nam). Obsessed with DooM since 1996. With this title, I
now have all the DHT 6 titles and 6 DHT 5 titles (17 total,
13 unduplicated). Since this is my last title (at least
until Frank opens up some more), I just want to say "Thanks"
- especially to Frank who has made this game really come
alive. Also Dave Ryding, who's a better player than me (and
I'm pretty damn good :-) and who introduced this obsession
to me a couple of years ago. I always enjoy our visits when
we stay up till dawn doomin' the night away. Also high
regard to Rini, Poeppy, George Bell, Patrick Martin, Rich
Sham, demonlord, etc. all of whom have made some terrific
lmps. Rini and Poeppy came up with pacifist - a really
great innovation (see the pacifist collection that Rini has
assembled, much like George's Tyson collection). Keep
doomin', folks...
