This completes the last level to the base! Every Doom I
level has now been completed alone in Nightmare!
E1M2: Quite easy, no comment.
E2M9: This one is a lot of fun because you can get the monsters to
battle it out. The crux is certainly doing the dance, as there
isn't much time to hide.
E1M3: I cursed my bad luck when I saw this "impossible" level in my
challenge. But then I found I was having fun working on
recording it, more fun than E2M6 where the hard part is at the end.
Everybody talks about how hard it is to get out of the start room,
but I didn't realize it doesn't get much easier after that!
A dozen times I was able to make it past the blue key, and once
even back to the starting area. I was having a good time working
on this, but then I noticed a new d1i exam in the incoming directory.
I do not really have the time to spend recording E1M5 and E1M9,
so yes I wimped out (which I'm not too happy about, see Notes).
Given a couple more days, I'm certain I could finish this level.
E2M3: I watched Steffen's D1S exam and then recorded this on my first try.
With plasma you can go very fast and keep the swarms from descending.
Dance near the end in the room with the Soul Sphere.
E3M2: This level is a good joke as "hard", but I was doing the laughing
as it made my substitution quick. It should be in the easy set!
E3M4: OK, so this one is a little tougher. With two invulnerabilities,
though, how hard can it be? This one actually took quite a
few tries, so I guess it may belong in the hard set. It's easy to
frag yourself the first minute or so with only the rocket launcher.
E2M6: Out-of-base was pretty obvious, as this was the only one left!
To get through this level you need lightning speed, and also
incredible luck at the end. This run is actually the ONLY TIME
I got past the blue key, even counting hundreds of practice runs
starting from a saved game just before the red key!
This level is claustrophobic and often there is very little room
to dodge around. Quite rapidly, I grew to hate this level
(unlike E1M3). The rocket launcher is right at the start but
there is never enough room to use it (maybe only on a Baron).
I dance after the start, near the berzerk pack, while things are
still open and beautiful.
There are at least three difficult sections, not even counting
the start. The first is around the yellow key. Usually
if the Cacodemon in the central region respawns it is the kiss of
death, but that happens in this lmp and I escape (barely).
Second, the red key maze is probably where I died the most. Once
you get the plasma gun you can drill a hole in the swarm of nasties,
but getting back out the door is unbelievably difficult. Usually
there is a Baron wedged in that door flinging green plasma down
your throat! I watched Steffen Winterfeldt's D1S exam about 20
times, trying to figure out how he got out of that red key room.
As best I can tell, it's pure luck. In my lmp the Baron is first
blocking that door, so I move aside in a desperate attempt to draw
him over. Watch closely and you will see that a demon from my room
attacks him and he steps back.
The final exit dash is unbelievably desperate. Where Steffen
relied on plasma when he runs into a Demon I have only a prayer.
If you watch in overhead view you will see there is a Demon ten
feet behind me this whole time! It is just barely possible to
snatch the blue key and dash out before yet another mass of Demons
is released. If you blow it you end up being trapped by them (with
plenty of cells Steffen simply fries them in plasma). I practiced
this snatch countless times but still was only able to do it one out
of three attempts. Thank god I was able to pull it off in this
recording. In the final miracle, I don't slam into the Demon behind
but dash past as he blocks for me!
FREE: With 5 titles, I suddenly realized I have not killed a Cyberdemon
yet. Since this may be my last one, I decided to do E2M8 (in NM
of course). Not much to talk about, I was running out of time.
Notes: I honestly think I may be the last Doom I Incubus, due to the
difficulty of the final hard set. In particular, getting past
E1M3, E1M5, E1M9 and E2M6 will take one incredible Doom player.
I doubt anyone like me with a real job has the time for it. ;^)
Like Simon Widlake, I don't much like the time pressure in
these advanced exams. People are rushed to submit half-baked
performances and hastily thought out free interpretations. For
Incubus and Tyson, the time and difficulty of doing all the hard
levels is really an enticement to get the exam in fast if you
see another one ahead of you. Of course with the base full
for a lot of titles, the time pressure ends!
Author This is my 5th and possibly last title, D2M, D2SG, D2GM, D2I, D1I.
Info: I like NightMare lmps because they are generally action packed
and short. But now I have to get back to my real life!
