| 5 --[ Earned my Terraform certification but not for a good reason | |
| 6 | |
| 7 | |
| 8 This is a bit of a rant, I just need to vent. | |
| 9 | |
| 10 | |
| 11 I work as a Platform Engineer, and I use Terraform daily for deploying | |
| 12 infrastructure in Azure/AWS and writing modules. The problem is my | |
| 13 current place of employment; they have a very unique take on Terraform | |
| 14 design that goes against many, scrap that, all documented best | |
| 15 practices. This is a "design" decision they have actively chosen. | |
| 16 | |
| 17 | |
| 18 Normally, I don't really care for certifications; the only ones I have | |
| 19 ever obtained were the AWS Certified Solutions Architect and, prior to | |
| 20 that, the Linux Foundation's LFCS. Both have since expired and I never | |
| 21 bothered to renew them. On a side note, I really liked the LFCS; it was | |
| 22 a practical exam. I was given SSH access to a server on which I had to | |
| 23 carry out various tasks and fixes. | |
| 24 | |
| 25 | |
| 26 Anyway, I am quite worried about losing my current skill set. In my last | |
| 27 place, we used enterprise-grade products such as Terraform | |
| 28 Cloud/Enterprise and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform however in my | |
| 29 current place its definitely somewhere where they prefer to spend a LOT | |
| 30 of time attempting to roll there own custom solutions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ | |
| 31 | |
| 32 | |
| 33 However, as I don't have access to Terraform Cloud/Enterprise anymore, | |
| 34 I have been out of the loop for a around year now. I ended up reaching | |
| 35 out to someone I know and managed to get access to an enterprise | |
| 36 account. With that access, I have been experimenting during my personal | |
| 37 time to stay updated with all the new features I have missed over the | |
| 38 past year. Then today, I took the Terraform Certification Exam 003 and | |
| 39 passed with a 91% score. Woo! [0] | |
| 40 | |
| 41 | |
| 42 Given the changes in my current role that have limited my hands-on | |
| 43 experience with Terraform Enterprise, I did feel compelled to take the | |
| 44 exam and gain certification. This way, I can now at least provide | |
| 45 tangible evidence of my proficiency in using some form enterprise-level | |
| 46 Terraform along with my past experience with it, which I can, sadly, no | |
| 47 longer claim to apply in my current role as it stands. | |
