I have used the AMPEX MEGASTORE with full complement of core (looks like 4
RS04 disks). Although the main use was for real-time output of 24k-bit voice
I also tried it as swap and tmp under general circumstances. One result,
although I don't remember the exact numbers, was that C-compiles etc
were significantly improved. However, because I was using an 11/34A, the CPU
speed then became the limiting factor. under heavy load conditions, the
disks did in fact achieve near-zero latency.
